# Connect an AI agent

## Give your agent a way into Sprintree

To work on your cards, an AI agent needs a connection to Sprintree. The connection is called an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets AI tools use outside apps. Sprintree's MCP server lives at this address:

```text
https://sprintree.com/mcp
```

You sign in once. After that the agent can list your projects, read cards and, if you allow it, change them.

The same commands are on the **API & MCP** page of your account **Settings**, under **Connect an AI agent**, ready to copy.

## Choose how to sign in

There are two ways.

- **OAuth sign-in (recommended).** The agent opens your browser, you sign in to Sprintree and decide what it may do. There is no token to copy. OAuth is a standard sign-in where you approve an app without giving it your password.
- **Personal access token.** You create a token in Sprintree and give it to the tool. Use this for scripts and tools that cannot open a browser. See [Access tokens](https://sprintree.com/docs/access-tokens).

On the OAuth approval page you see which app is asking and which account it will act as. You then choose what to allow.

- **Read** is always on. The agent can read projects, cards, comments and pages.
- **Write** lets it create and change cards, comment and move statuses. Leave it off for a read-only agent.
- **Account settings** is off unless you tick it. It lets the agent change your own settings, answer invitations and save triggers. In Claude Code it is also needed to act on `/claude` comments, as described in [Live events](https://sprintree.com/docs/live-events). Only OAuth sign-in can grant it. A personal access token never has it.

Press **Allow** to finish. To remove access later, open **Settings**, then **API & MCP**, find the app under **Connected apps** and press its delete icon.

## Connect Claude Code

1. In your terminal, run the plugin install command:

   ```bash
   claude plugin marketplace add SNebiyev/sprintree-agent && claude plugin install sprintree@sprintree
   ```

2. In Claude Code, run `/mcp`, pick **sprintree** and sign in.

The plugin adds the MCP server for you, so you do not need `claude mcp add`. It also adds a skill that keeps your board in sync with what the agent does. To update it later, run `claude plugin marketplace update sprintree && claude plugin update sprintree@sprintree`.

Without the plugin, run:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user sprintree https://sprintree.com/mcp
```

## Connect Codex

1. Install the plugin:

   ```bash
   codex plugin marketplace add SNebiyev/sprintree-agent && codex plugin add sprintree@sprintree
   ```

2. Sign in with `codex mcp login sprintree`.

Without the plugin, run `codex mcp add sprintree --url https://sprintree.com/mcp`.

## Connect Gemini CLI

Run `gemini extensions install https://github.com/SNebiyev/sprintree-agent`, then `/mcp auth sprintree` in Gemini CLI.

## Connect Cursor, Claude.ai, Claude desktop or ChatGPT

These apps have no Sprintree plugin. Add Sprintree as a remote MCP server (some apps call it a connector) with the address above, and choose OAuth when asked.

- **Cursor and Claude desktop:** open the app's MCP or connectors settings and add a new server with the address.
- **Claude.ai:** add a custom connector in the connectors settings with the address.
- **ChatGPT:** turn on Developer mode under Settings, then Security and login, then add the address under Plugins.

Menu names change between app versions. If you cannot find the setting, search the app's help for "remote MCP server" or "custom connector".

## Check that it works

1. Ask your agent, "List my Sprintree projects."
2. It should answer with the names and keys of your projects. A key is the short code in front of card numbers, such as WEB-12.
3. Ask it to read one card, for example "Show me WEB-1."

If the agent says it needs authentication, sign in again with `/mcp` (Claude Code) or the login command of your tool.

## Tips and common mistakes

> [!NOTE]
> The Sprintree plugin connects to sprintree.com. If you run your own server, add it without the plugin, using your server's address followed by `/mcp`.

- The agent can do only what you can. A viewer in a project stays a viewer, even through an agent.
- Tokens do not expire. They work until you revoke them. Keep them in your tool's secret settings, never in a card or a file you commit.
- The plugin's skill loads for sync, task and handover requests. Add the card rules from the plugin's `templates/AGENTS.md` file to your `CLAUDE.md` or `AGENTS.md` so they apply in every session.
- If you can only choose one thing, choose Read first. Turn on Write when you trust the setup.
