# Sprintree for solo developers

Sprintree is a small issue tracker you can use alone. You get a private project with a board, cycles and pages, and an AI agent can work on your cards over MCP (Model Context Protocol, a standard way for an AI tool to talk to an app). You do not need a team to use it.

## Is this for you?

Sprintree fits you if:

- You work alone, or for a few clients, and want one place to see what is waiting, underway and done.
- You want to plan a week or two without building a process first. See [Cycles](https://sprintree.com/docs/cycles) and [Weekly commitments](https://sprintree.com/docs/commitments).
- You keep briefs, decisions and notes next to the work. See [Pages](https://sprintree.com/docs/pages).
- You already use an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and you want it to read your cards and report back. See [Connect an AI agent](https://sprintree.com/docs/connect-an-ai-agent).

Sprintree is not for you if you need heavy custom workflows or enterprise reporting. It keeps things small: projects, cards, a board, cycles and pages.

## A week as a freelance developer

Say you are building a website for a client, and you work alone.

1. **Monday: set up.** You create a project with the key `WEB` and keep it **Private**, so only you can see it. This takes about five minutes. See [Quick start](https://sprintree.com/docs/quick-start).
2. **Break the job down.** You add an epic ("Launch the website"), a story for each part, and tasks under them. You can skip this and use plain tasks. See [Core ideas](https://sprintree.com/docs/core-ideas).
3. **Plan the period.** You make a two-week cycle and add the tasks for the launch. On Monday you commit to the three cards you want to finish this week, and they show up under **My issues**, **This week**.
4. **Keep the brief in one place.** You write the client's brief as a page in the project. When the client changes their mind, you edit the page, and the page history keeps the old version.
5. **Hand work to your agent.** You connect Claude Code once. Then you say, "Take the next To do card in WEB." The agent reads the card and your project rules, moves the card to In progress, and starts. See [Work with AI agents](https://sprintree.com/docs/work-with-ai-agents).
6. **Answer from your phone.** If the agent cannot choose between two options, it asks you a question on the card, and you answer with one tap. See [Agent questions](https://sprintree.com/docs/agent-questions).
7. **Friday: review.** You open the board, read what the agent reported on each finished card, and move the cards you accept to Done. See [Use the board](https://sprintree.com/docs/board) and [Work records](https://sprintree.com/docs/work-records).

## How do I start?

1. Create your first project and a few tasks. Follow [Quick start](https://sprintree.com/docs/quick-start).
2. Open the board and drag a card to **In progress** when you start it. See [Use the board](https://sprintree.com/docs/board).
3. Write down the standing rules you want your agent to follow, such as "Run the linter before every commit". See [Memory Drawer](https://sprintree.com/docs/memory-drawer).
4. Connect an AI agent. See [Connect an AI agent](https://sprintree.com/docs/connect-an-ai-agent).
5. When you want a plan, add a [cycle](https://sprintree.com/docs/cycles) and your [weekly commitments](https://sprintree.com/docs/commitments).

## Questions solo developers ask

### Do I need a team to use Sprintree?

No. A **Private** project is only for you. You choose the visibility when you create the project.

![The new project form with the name, key and visibility controls highlighted](https://sprintree.com/docs-media/quick-start-project-light-e5defa58.webp)

### Can I add a client or a teammate later?

Yes. Invite them by email and choose a role: Editor or Viewer. A client who only follows progress can be a Viewer. If a project is Private, Sprintree asks before it changes the project to Shared. See [Invitations](https://sprintree.com/docs/invitations) and [Members and roles](https://sprintree.com/docs/members-and-roles).

### Do I have to use epics and stories?

No. A small project can use tasks alone. Add stories and epics only when a goal needs them. See [Core ideas](https://sprintree.com/docs/core-ideas).

### Where do I keep notes that are not tasks?

In [Pages](https://sprintree.com/docs/pages). A page is a document inside the project, with saved versions. Use a card for work you track through a status, and a page for information you come back to.

### Can an AI agent do my work for me?

An agent can take a card, do the work in your editor or terminal, and report back. Sprintree does not run a model itself. Your own agent does the work, on your machine or in your AI app, and it can do only what you can do.

> [!NOTE]
> Everyone who can read a project reads the agent's comments. On a Private project that is only you, but do not ask an agent to write secrets on a card.

### Which AI tools can I use?

Claude Code and Codex have a Sprintree plugin, and Gemini CLI has a Sprintree extension. Cursor, Claude.ai, Claude desktop and ChatGPT connect as a remote MCP server. See [Connect an AI agent](https://sprintree.com/docs/connect-an-ai-agent) for each one.

### How do I know what the agent really did?

Open the card and read the **Work** section. It lists the checks the agent ran, the commits it made and a short summary. It is what the agent reported, so open the commits when it matters. If you connect a GitHub repository, commits that name the card also show on it. See [Work records](https://sprintree.com/docs/work-records) and [GitHub](https://sprintree.com/docs/github).

### Can I get a short summary of my day?

If Telegram is turned on for your Sprintree server, you can link it and get one morning message with what is due and what is waiting for you. See [Telegram and Slack](https://sprintree.com/docs/telegram-and-slack).

### Can I take my data with me?

Yes. You can export your cards, pages and comments as Markdown or JSON from Settings. See [Settings and preferences](https://sprintree.com/docs/settings-and-preferences#how-do-i-export-my-data).
